Originally, the monument was installed at the site where Tverskoy Boulevard meets Strastnaya Square, now known as Pushkin Square. Due to the reconstruction of the square, a decision was made to relocate it. The granite foundation was dismantled, and the pedestal with the sculpture was moved using special winches, which took about six hours. As a result, the monument changed slightly. A concrete foundation was created at the new location, and only in 1950 did it take its current position.

The sculpture of the poet, depicted in full height, is made of bronze. The composition is impressive: a relaxed pose with the left leg extended forward, a wide cloak on the shoulder, the right hand behind the lapel of the jacket, and a hat in the left hand. The poet's gaze is thoughtful, and his head is slightly tilted.

Sculptor Alexander Opekushin aimed to accurately convey Pushkin's facial features, which he achieved by using a lifetime portrait and the poet's death mask.

The monument is surrounded by 20 pedestals adorned with bronze wreaths and connected by a twisted bronze chain. Cast-iron lanterns with four lights are installed at the corners of the square.

The monument was restored twice, in 1993 and 2003, and a major restoration was completed in 2017. The Moscow Cadastre Chamber, together with the Department of Cultural Heritage of the capital, included the Pushkin monument in the Unified State Register of Real Estate as a cultural heritage site.
