The monument states: "A. Chekhov died in Badenweiler on 15.07.1904." The original bust was erected thanks to the efforts of the writer's friends, particularly Konstantin Sergeyevich Stanislavsky and the Russian envoy at the Baden court, D.A. von Eichler. The bust was placed in a park overlooking the Rhine Valley, which Chekhov particularly loved during his lifetime. However, in 1918, the Germans melted down this sculpture for military needs, as bronze was necessary for the army. The current monument has a plaque indicating Chekhov's years of life and mentioning that the first monument was erected between 1908 and 1918.

In 1992, the Chekhov Museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk created a new bust for Badenweiler. The author was Sakhalin sculptor Vladimir Chebotaryov. The second bust was cast in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk at the initiative of Georgy Miromanov, chairman of the Sakhalin Society named after A.P. Chekhov and director of the A.P. Chekhov Book Museum "Island Sakhalin."

Interestingly, in the late 19th century, Badenweiler tried to forget about Chekhov to avoid tarnishing the rest of European vacationers. During the world wars, the owner of the "Sommer" hotel twice removed the memorial plaque from the balcony of the room where Chekhov stayed, fearing imprisonment.

The writer was only remembered in 1954 when a postcard from Bulgaria arrived in Badenweiler from doctor V. Bakardiev, asking for information about Chekhov's last days in this town. The search for information about Chekhov's life in Badenweiler renewed connections with Russian historians, and the memory of the writer was restored.

In the early 1960s, a small commemorative plaque was installed in the park. In 1980, a fragment of the old monument, where the melted bust once stood, was found overgrown with bushes in the park.
