The monument to A.N. Apukhtin is located in the center of Bolkhov, the administrative center of the Bolkhovsky district in the Oryol region. Alexei Nikolaevich Apukhtin, a Russian poet, lived from 1840 to 1893 and was born in Bolkhov to a family of modest nobility. He was buried in St. Petersburg, and an original monument with a bust of the poet and lines from his works was erected in his homeland.

Alexei Nikolaevich, a native of Bolkhov, was a friend and associate of P.I. Tchaikovsky, whom he met at the Imperial Law School, which he graduated from in 1859. Some of his works were set to music by Tchaikovsky, including the famous romance "Mad Nights." From 1862, Apukhtin lived in his ancestral estate in the Oryol province and worked as a senior official for special assignments under the governor in 1863 and 1865. Later, he served in St. Petersburg at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In the 1870s, he began to experience problems with obesity, which worsened significantly in the last ten years of his life. Two years before his death, he fell ill with dropsy and spent almost all of his remaining time at home, being mostly immobile. He died on August 17, 1893, in St. Petersburg.
