Chambers of the Tver Courtyard

Фото 1
The modern property No. 17 has belonged to the Tver Courtyard since the 17th century, where the residence of the Tver archbishops was located. The "Census of Moscow Yards" from 1620 mentions that next to "Christmas" on the street corresponding to today's Kuznetsky Most, there is the yard of the Tver "Archbishop Pafnutiy." In the 17th century, rectangular stone chambers were built on the territory of the Tver Courtyard. By the end of the century, a two-story stone structure with vaults was added to the northwest corner of the building. It is likely that around the same time, the stone church of St. Arsenius, the Bishop of Tver, was erected, which was dismantled around 1770.

Over time, the courtyard area was developed, including stone buildings with shops on the first floors along Kuznetsky Most. As a result, the ancient chambers ended up in the courtyard of a new quarter. In the 1830s, the chambers were completely rebuilt according to the new architectural fashion, and the decorative profile brickwork was removed from the facades.

Some of the courtyard's buildings were rented out, housing residential apartments and shops. In the 1770s, one of the apartments was home to the family of Franz Morelli, a dance teacher at Moscow University, who later became the choreographer of the Bolshoi Petrovsky Theater of M. Medoks.

In the 1810s and 1820s, there was a workshop of the famous sculptor Santino Campioni, who produced marble and bronze sculptures. His works adorn many buildings in Moscow, such as the Noble Assembly House on Okhotny Ryad, Count Razumovsky's house on Gorokhovoye Pole, Golitsyn Hospital, and the palaces of Ostankino and Arkhangelsk.

In 1996, most of the buildings of the Tver Courtyard, including those facing Kuznetsky Most, were demolished, and an office and retail complex was built in their place. Only the 17th-century chambers of the ensemble were preserved, which were scientifically restored at that time with the restoration of the decorative embellishments of the facades. The building is under state protection and included in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Sites of Russia.

From December 2020 to April 2021, the building underwent restoration, during which a comprehensive repair of the roof, facades, and interiors was carried out.
