In 1728, the "Kaluga schismatic" Nikifor Makarov built the chambers on the edge of the Berezuy ravine. The Makarov family owned this building until the early 20th century. These chambers are a monument of Kaluga's civil architecture from the early 18th century in the style of early Baroque.

The main value of this monument lies in the use of architectural order in residential construction in Kaluga: the facades are adorned with pilasters of the Tuscan order. Another feature of the building is the difference among all four facades, which brings it closer to the architecture of the 17th century. The building has remained almost in its original form, although the decorative framing of the windows on all three floors has been altered. During the Soviet era, an external staircase was added to the second floor.
