One of the symbols of early Russian modernism in the early 20th century became the mansion of the famous Moscow entrepreneur Stepan Ryabushinsky, who was considered one of the wealthiest people in pre-revolutionary Moscow. Unlike many other landmarks in the capital, Ryabushinsky's mansion survived the Soviet years and has remained in excellent condition to this day.

Construction of Ryabushinsky's estate began in the summer of 1900, when great hopes were placed on the new century. Everyone was confident that it would become a symbol of technological progress, peace, and prosperity. Stepan Ryabushinsky, whose wealth was growing, decided to build a spacious estate with a main house and outbuildings. A garden was laid out around it, with fountains and other elements of comfortable living. The estate was designed by the already well-known architect Fyodor Osipovich Shekhtel.

By 1903, the construction was completed, and Muscovites were amazed by the beauty they saw. The mansion itself was built in an unusual style for most. In addition to the owner's family, the house housed a large collection of ancient icons, a private gallery, and later a restoration workshop. However, in 1917, severe upheavals occurred, and life as it was changed. The Ryabushinskys were forced to leave the country, and their property was confiscated by the new authorities, who destroyed part of the estate.

Ryabushinsky's mansion was preserved because it was taken under the care of influential figures of the new government. From 1931, the building housed Gorky, who was visited by many famous writers and poets. However, his stay here was not accidental; in fact, he was under house arrest, which became a kind of 'golden cage.'

In 1965, the Gorky Museum opened in the building, which still operates today. The house has been beautifully preserved and continues to amaze with its beauty.
