The Italian Embassy in Russia is located in the former mansion of Sergiy Pavlovich Berg on Denежный Lane.

According to plans from 1806, there was a estate on this site owned by Countess Ekaterina Petrovna Zotova. The building burned down in 1812 during the Moscow fire but was restored in 1824. In 1897, the plot was acquired by Sergiy Pavlovich Berg, who decided to build a stone mansion here. The project in the style of neoclassicism and neo-baroque was developed by architect P. S. Boytsov, and construction was overseen by architect K. A. Dulyn.

In 1918, after Berg's departure to Switzerland, the mansion housed the German mission led by envoy von Mirbach, who was killed in the Red Hall by two agents of the Cheka, members of the Left Socialist-Revolutionaries. In 1919, the building became the headquarters of the Executive Committee of the Communist International, where Zinoviev, Trotsky, Radek, and Bukharin worked. Nadezhda Krupskaya, Lenin's wife, often visited here, and Lenin himself was present.

After the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and the Soviet Union in 1924, Berg's mansion was handed over to the Italian diplomatic mission.
