New Parnassus

Фото 1
A multi-meter hill known as New Parnassus rises above the landscaped park. It received this name not by chance: in European parks, Parnassus refers to elevations with a viewing platform at the top, from where one can see the entire green area and surroundings. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact time of New Parnassus's emergence, but it is believed to have been created during the Catherine era when such hills were popular in Russian landscape parks. Today, only a few visitors use it for its intended purpose, while in winter, people sled or ride on inflatable tubes from it. In the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, one of the main entertainments was watching the sunset from the top of Parnassus, which attracted many city dwellers. Now, this romantic function has been lost due to the view of modern high-rises that hinder the enjoyment of nature. Previously, Shuvalov's Parnassus reached a height of 61 meters, but in the early 90s, it was reduced by half to free children trapped in a disguised command post of the Leningrad front, built inside the hill during the Great Patriotic War.
