A solemn service dedicated to the opening of the New Leushin Women's Monastery took place in the Church of Saint Prophet John the Baptist and Forerunner of the Lord in the village of Myaksa. The service was led by Bishop Flavian of Cherepovets and Belozersk.

In the 1940s, the Leushin John the Baptist Women's Monastery, known as the Northern Women's Lavra, was flooded by the waters of the Rybinsk Reservoir. In the last years before its closure, about 700 nuns lived in the monastery. The spiritual mentor of the monastery for a long time was the righteous Saint John of Kronstadt. The abbess of the monastery for nearly 35 years was Abbess Thaisiya Solopova, a well-known spiritual writer and founder of more than ten monasteries in the Vologda and Novgorod provinces. Currently, materials are being gathered for her canonization.

In 2015, on the centenary of Abbess Thaisiya's death, a decision was made to revive the Leushin Monastery on the banks of the Rybinsk Reservoir. In the village of Myaksa, the closest place to the flooded monastery, a women's monastic community was established at the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist. For many years, prayer vigils were held here in memory of the flooded shrines of Upper Volga.

On December 27, 2016, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church transformed the monastic community, the Archpastoral Courtyard, into the New Leushin John the Baptist Women's Monastery. Currently, there are 10 nuns living in the monastery, and the Divine Liturgy is celebrated daily.

Before the revolution, there were 134 monasteries in the territory of modern Vologda Oblast. New Leushin became the fifth of the currently active ones.
