Both churches, like a pair of newlyweds, resonate with each other through similar elements, creating a harmonious ensemble of the main monastic buildings. The space between the temples is mostly occupied by a rural cemetery. The ensemble of churches is surrounded by household buildings, a monastic garden with flowerbeds, and a stone fence with Holy gates and other entrances. The gilding of both temples is the result of a large-scale restoration carried out from 2002 to 2006.
In Sanino, where the traditions of piety and loyalty to Orthodoxy are strong, the waves of state terrorism, vandalism, and robbery in the 1930s and 1950s-60s did not cause as much damage as in other places. This was made possible by the selflessness of the local residents and clergy. The elders and priests devised various tricks to protect the temple from terror. Especially inventive was the secret nun and elder, Sister Angelina Semenova, who hid the keys to the temples from the commissions. Although repairs to the churches were not allowed, and the walls, frescoes, and roofs gradually deteriorated, the interior decoration was preserved almost untouched. This is truly a miracle. The heavenly kingdom to all the ascetics of Sanino. However, during the perestroika period, barbarians and thieves were still able to rob the temples, taking away 260 icons.
On November 12, 1999, the parish of the Holy Nikolsky Church in Sanino was registered. In October 2001, the Holy Nikolskaya Women's Community was formed, representing a dependency of the Vladimir Mother of God-Christmas Men's Monastery. The sisters settled in an old house and began to improve the churches and the surrounding area. They found a sponsor for the restoration of the churches of the Protection and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The domes were restored, and the facade was repaired. Alarm systems were installed in the churches due to frequent attempts to steal icons. Several icons with silver frames were stolen by vandals.
In the Sanino temple, icons are being restored without the involvement of restorers. This miracle has attracted the attention of artists, but there is no scientific explanation yet. The nuns of the Holy Nikolsky Women's Monastery do not know what this manifestation of God's attention means. The main miracles await pilgrims in the temple, where one can observe the process of self-renewal of the icons.
