The Holy Cup area is located on the right bank of the Berkas stream, which is a right tributary of the Oshima River, 140 km east of Kazan and 3 km southwest of the center of Mamadysh. Since ancient times, people have come here for water. In the early 18th century, an icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra was found at the spring. In 1811, a Nicholas chapel was built for it in the southeast corner of the fence of the Trinity Cathedral in Mamadysh, but in the 1930s it was demolished along with the cathedral. Later, merchants from Elabuga acquired this icon and placed it in their Nicholas church. Every year, during the feast of the Kazan icon, the icon was carried to Mamadysh in a procession. People flocked to the Holy Cup not only from nearby villages and settlements of the Mamadysh district of Kazan province but also from the Vyatka and Ufa provinces. A chapel was built at the spring, but after 1917 it was demolished, the icon was lost, and the spring was abandoned. On December 19, 2012, a new wooden chapel and bath were consecrated at the Holy Cup, and an icon brought from Jerusalem was placed in its red corner. Thus, the residents of the Mamadysh district regained the lost shrine.
