Nikolskaya Tower in Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

Фото 1
Nikolskaya Tower is a passage tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and is located in the elevated part between the Storage and Koromyslovaya Towers. It is adjacent to a pedestrian bridge built in 1982 over the Zeleny descent, on the site of an old wooden bridge.

The tower is named after the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which was previously located on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, opposite the Zeleny descent. The church and the adjacent burials have not survived to this day, but this place is recognized as a historical and cultural zone known as Nikolskoye Cemetery. In 2013, a chapel was built on the site of the church.

The towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, located along the slope down to the Pochaev, were used as powder storage, and in the ravine, there was a factory with a windmill called Zeleiny Dvor. Although Nikolskaya Tower was inferior in firepower to Dmitrievskaya, it played an important role in the defense of the fortress. The defenders of the tower were armed with three bronze cannons, the largest of which was Kazan, firing projectiles weighing 1.8 kg. Like other passage towers, Nikolskaya had gates with a protective grille and a drawbridge.

From 1785 to 1790, Nizhny Novgorod Governor I.M. Rebinder carried out a reconstruction of the Kremlin, changing its original appearance. During the work, the embrasures of Nikolskaya Tower were replaced with rectangular openings, and some of the battlements were removed. In the 18th-19th centuries, the tower stored supplies of provisions. In 1837, the structure lost its white stone cladding on the lower walls. Until 1956, the tower housed auxiliary premises of the military department. By 1959, restorers had restored the tower's tent roof and added a guard tower.

The tower, like the entire Kremlin, needs restoration. For a long time, it was a gathering place for various informal groups and suffered from vandalism.

In 2015, a museum exhibition titled "Remember the War!" dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War opened in Nikolskaya Tower.
