Nikitinskaya Chapel in Tula

Novonikitskaya, also known as the Sreten Church, was located at the end of the modern Metallists Street, where the monument to S.I. Mosin now stands. The church had its own chapel. Both structures were demolished in the early 1930s, possibly due to their proximity to the Pokrovsky Church, which caused confusion in names. The history of the chapel of the Pokrovsky Church begins with a mention in the 1685 Census Book, which speaks of the dilapidated holy gates on Nikolskaya Street and the chapel with an image of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos.

In 1748, the chapel burned down, and instead, a small stone reliquary with an image of the Savior was installed at the altar wall. By the 1760s, it had fallen into disrepair, and in 1766, a stone chapel was built in its place. The chapel that has survived to this day was erected along with trading shops in 1808. Due to the annual rise in the level of the street and sidewalk, half of the chapel was below ground, and during rains, water would seep into it. In 1878, the chapel was rebuilt according to the project of provincial architect V.M. Betyutsky. The construction was financed by the church elder merchant Artemov, as well as traders from Pyatnitskaya Street and the local market. In 1879, an ash iconostasis with columns and carvings was installed in the chapel.

The Pokrovsky Church was closed in 1933. Various enterprises were located in its building, and since the 1990s, it stood abandoned. The church shops and chapel were converted into housing. In the summer of 2009, the church and chapel were returned to the Tula Diocese. In the same year, for the feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos on October 14, a small dome was placed on the chapel. Last year, the chapel was restored, and on November 10, 2017, it was consecrated in the name of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. Since then, the chapel of the Pokrovsky Church has been called the Pyatnitskaya Chapel.
