Currently, on the site of the former Mozhaysk Kremlin stands the magnificent Nikolsky Cathedral, built in the early 19th century. This temple is unique in its Russian neo-Gothic style, making it resemble a Catholic church, which is unusual for Orthodox architecture.

The construction of the cathedral began long before Napoleon's army invaded and was completed only in 1814. Bonaparte's soldiers desecrated the unfinished temple, looted valuables, and destroyed the iconostasis, but this did not stop the builders. The cathedral was erected on the site of an older stone church, which, in turn, stood on the site of an ancient wooden church. This place is considered consecrated, which has special significance in Orthodoxy. The project of the cathedral was developed by the famous architect Alexei Nikitich Bakarev, a student of the great Matvey Kazakov. It was Bakarev who suggested experimenting with the Russian neo-Gothic style.

After 12 years of hard work, the construction of the cathedral was completed, and in 1816 it was consecrated. The cathedral amazed everyone with its unusual beauty, featuring a rotunda dome adorned with four corner towers in a rare Moorish style for Russia. Soon after, it was visited by Emperor Alexander I, who was pleasantly surprised.

In 1911, the famous Russian photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky visited the cathedral and took color photographs of the temple. Thanks to his work, we can see what the cathedral looked like over 100 years ago. Fortunately, the cathedral itself has also survived. It endured the harsh times of Soviet persecution of Orthodoxy, looting, the collapse of the bell tower, and its use as a concentration camp for German prisoners of war. According to memories, Lutheran and Catholic soldiers prayed in the ruined temple.

Today, the cathedral is undergoing restoration necessary to preserve this architectural monument. Daily services are held in the cathedral, and it is visited by numerous tourists and pilgrims wishing to see this beautiful example of Russian neo-Gothic.
