One of the most significant rulers in Russian history is Emperor Alexander III. However, how well do we really know him? Although much has been written about him, it is not always easy to separate truth from fiction. Like many outstanding figures, Alexander III became a target of historical falsifications and a victim of his popularity in certain circles. Today we will objectively examine some aspects of his life, including his attitude towards wars and reactionary reforms, contrasted with the transformations of Alexander II.

Even as an heir, Alexander III participated in the Russo-Turkish War alongside his father and brothers. He commanded the Ruschuk detachment of the Danube army, which operated in the most challenging section of the front. The future emperor proved himself to be a talented and brave commander, personally leading his troops into battle and rightfully earning awards. However, with combat experience came the realization of the need to avoid new wars. During his reign, he became known as a peacemaker, preventing major military conflict in Europe.

Alexander III inherited a vast empire after his father's assassination and found himself in a difficult situation. Society was divided: some demanded the continuation of Alexander II's reforms, while others insisted on reactionary policies. The threat of assassination attempts on the emperor only exacerbated the situation. In response, a society for the protection of the sovereign was created, consisting of people willing to sacrifice their lives for the tsar, including the great composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Alexander III chose his own path, focusing on the evolutionary development of the state. During his reign, the poll tax was abolished, economic reforms were implemented that fostered the development of capitalism, and the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began, connecting the disparate parts of the Russian Empire. Reforms continued, the country developed, but already without the dangerous feeling of ungovernability. Russia was in the reliable hands of a man who loved it and sought its well-being.
