The chapel was likely built by the elder of the Annunciation Church from the neighboring village of Velikovo, to which it was affiliated, by the carpet merchant of the second guild, Vasily Faddeevich Ilyin. Every year, the clergy of the Velikovo church held processions to it. Interestingly, modern residents of Velikovo celebrate Ilyin Day as a patronal feast, even though there has never been an Ilyin altar in the local church. It is likely that the chapel in the village of Gorozhonovo was popularly referred to as 'Ilyinskaya' after its builder's surname. Accordingly, the processions were called 'to the Ilyinskaya chapel,' and later simply 'Ilyin ones.' This may have led to a mistaken belief among the locals about the patronal feast. However, archival data confirming the chapel's name has not yet been found. Therefore, the assumption that the chapel is consecrated in honor of the prophet Elijah remains one of the hypotheses awaiting confirmation or refutation by archivists.
