Valentin Fedoseevich Nagorsky (1845, 1912) was an outstanding Russian epizootiologist and doctor of medicine, playing a key role in the organization of veterinary affairs in Russia. His life was closely connected with Kineshma, where he was born and spent his childhood. Nagorsky often visited here with his family, staying in the house built by his grandfather, priest Vasily Melichkinsky. His grandfather was known not only as a preacher but also as a talented self-taught engineer, architect, and hydraulic engineer. Valentin Fedoseevich inherited a variety of interests from him. Astronomy was a respite for Nagorsky from the intense work in veterinary medicine. He was friends with F. A. Bredikhin, and in the house built by his son, architect N. V. Nagorsky, there was a provision for an observatory. However, due to his intense scientific and public activities, his health deteriorated. In a letter to a friend, hygienist scientist F. F. Erisman, he diagnosed himself: asthma, arteriosclerosis, and insufficiency of the aortic semilunar valves. Treatment in Italy did not help, and on March 29, 1912, he passed away. His body was transported to Kineshma, where he was buried in the cemetery near the Alexander Nevsky Church in the presence of many friends and delegations from various institutions.
