Chapel of the Swensk Icon of the Mother of God in the Swensk Assumption Monastery

The holy spring, associated with one of the oldest monasteries in Russia, the Holy Assumption Men's Monastery, is dedicated to the Swensk Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. In summer and winter, healing water flows from the high hill where the monastery was founded in 1288. Archimandrite Ierofey, the abbot of the Swensk Monastery, mentions the chapel and the holy spring from which monks and pilgrims took water for spiritual benefit and healing. After the monastery was closed in 1924, the spring was abandoned, and the once snow-white hill became overgrown with forest and marshy. In 1992, when the monastery returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, believers cleaned the spring and arranged a bathing area. Parishioners testify to miraculous healings occurring here. Every year, during the feasts of the Baptism of the Lord and the Icon of the Mother of God, the Life-Giving Spring, and the Exaltation of the Honorable Wood of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, a procession with water blessing is held to the spring.

The chapel by the holy spring was built with the blessing of Bishop Theophilakt of Bryansk and Sevsk under Archimandrite Nikodim (Aniskin) with funds from S.A. Prokofyev, the monastery brotherhood, and the residents of Bryansk in 2005-2006. On December 17, 2006, the consecration of the bathing area took place at the Holy Assumption Swensk Monastery, conducted by Hieromonk Alexiy in the presence of a large gathering of people. By the order of Bishop Theophilakt, he presented S.A. Prokofyev with an archpastoral certificate 'In Blessing for Diligent Labors for the Glory of the Holy Church' and a letter of gratitude from Archimandrite Nikodim and the brotherhood for assistance in restoring and beautifying the ancient monastery of the Bryansk region.
