“With the money he spent on Montreux Palace, one could have bought a castle,” said Dmitry Nabokov, the son of the famous writer. Vladimir Nabokov and his wife Vera arrived in Montreux, Switzerland, in October 1960. Initially, they planned to stay for a short time, but ultimately lived in the hotel for 17 years. The writer passed away in Montreux Palace in 1977. Nabokov rented an apartment on the sixth floor, which is now called Nabokov’s Floor. From the balcony, he enjoyed the view of Lake Geneva and posed for photographers. Here he created several of his works. Today, guests of this room live in a true museum, where Nabokov's personal belongings are kept, and receive as a gift the novel “Laura and Her Original,” which the writer did not manage to complete. A monument to the Russian writer has been erected at the hotel, and he is buried in the cemetery in Clarens, not far from Montreux, Switzerland.
