The monastery of Saint Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates is one of the oldest cave monasteries in Crimea. Founded by icon worshippers in the 8th-9th centuries, it existed until 1475 when the Turkish army captured the principality of Theodoro. The name of the monastery is preserved in the name of the rock. Here are located 22 caves of various sizes and purposes: monks' cells, storage rooms, the steward's quarters, a large dining hall, and a cave temple. In ancient times, the caves were connected by wooden ladders and passages, which is why the Tatars called it Cheltter-Koba, where 'cheltter' means 'grate' and 'koba' means 'cave'. Surviving difficult times of conquests and desolation, the monastery was revived. Worship services were restored, the temple was decorated, and thousands of believers, pilgrims, and tourists climb the mountains to touch the shrine and pray. A monastery courtyard is being built, and a small hotel is ready to welcome pilgrims. The brotherhood lives under the spiritual guidance of the abbot.
In the autumn of 2000, with the blessing of the Metropolitan of Simferopol and Crimea, Bishop Lazarus, monk Daniel settled in the abandoned monastery, marking the beginning of its revival. Since 2002, worship services have resumed. In the summer of 2006, the spring was beautified and a baptismal font was equipped. In the spring of 2007, the temple was fenced off and equipped with a door, and it is heated in winter. In the autumn of 2007, a bell tower was installed.
