The museum began receiving visitors on July 4, 1992. By November 30, 2011, its collections numbered 8,760 items, of which 7,285 were part of the main collection and 1,475 were scientific auxiliary.

The museum's collection features more than ten different assemblages. Among them, the painting collection stands out, including works by local artists such as V.I. Savinov and G.N. Timofeev. The numismatic collection includes coins, orders, medals, and badges. There is also a collection of decorative and applied arts.

The archaeological collection of the museum consists of 492 items. Among the rarities, one can find a 16th-century Streltsy berdysh, samples of medieval bronze metalwork, and other unique artifacts. The museum also houses paleontological materials, including bones of mammoth fauna and woolly rhinoceros.

The natural history collection is represented by stuffed animals that inhabit the forests of the region, as well as stuffed forest and waterfowl. The ethnographic collection includes items from the cultures of the indigenous peoples of the Khanty and Mansi, as well as Russian settlers who arrived in the 16th-17th centuries.

The museum possesses a collection of written documents reflecting the history of the region. Among them is a book of documents from the Kodsky Holy Trinity Monastery from the early 19th century and documents from the Great Patriotic War, such as letters and certificates.

In 2003, the museum's exhibition was updated, and now it features 9 permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary displays. Since 2006, the museum has organized an annual conference "Timofeev Readings" for young historians and local historians, the results of which are published in a collection.

In 2006, the museum received the "Event" award for the exhibition project "Victory... one for all, we will not stand back on price," and in 2007, for the project "II Open Conference of Young Historians and Local Historians." The museum also conducts a summer recreation program for children called "Young Museum Worker" and publishes printed materials such as brochures and collections.
