The Museum of Vyatka Folk Arts and Crafts was opened on November 11, 1977. It is located in one of the first stone buildings of the city, dating back to the first half of the 18th century and recognized as a monument of history and culture of federal significance. After restoration carried out from 1973 to 1975, an exhibition dedicated to the history of folk applied arts of the Vyatka region was created in this building.

The museum features unique works by Vyatka masters, which make up the "golden fund" of the Kirov Regional Local History Museum. In the 19th century, there were about 70 types of various crafts in the Vyatka province, and it ranked among the leading regions in Russia in terms of the number of craftsmen. Today, traditional artistic crafts continue to develop, such as the production of clay toys, artistic processing of birch bark, wood carving and painting, and lace-making. The best examples of these and other crafts can be seen in the exhibition.

The museum actively organizes exchange exhibitions with other centers of artistic crafts. The residents of the city have had the opportunity to get acquainted with the art of Zlatoust and Kasli masters, such as "Zlatoust Steel Engraving" and "Kasli Artistic Casting," as well as with the works of Ural jewelers and stone carvers within the exhibition "Stones of the Urals." It has also hosted exhibitions like "Tobolsk Carved Bone," "Golden Khokhloma," "Golden Amber," "Clay Toys of Russia," and "Vyatka Whistler."

Exhibitions from the Kirov Regional Local History Museum have also traveled to many cities in Russia, contributing to the spread of the fame of Vyatka masters.
