"Khamovniki" is an ancient estate in Moscow that Leo Tolstoy acquired in 1882 from collegiate secretary I. A. Arnautov. The writer lived here with his family for 19 winters, until spring 1901, while spending the summer months in Yasnaya Polyana. Of the 13 Tolstoy children, 10 lived in the Moscow estate: daughters Tatyana, Maria, Alexandra, and sons Sergey, Ilya, Lev, Andrey, Mikhail, Alexei, and Vanechka.

In the house in Khamovniki, Tolstoy wrote about a hundred works, including the novel "Resurrection" and the stories "The Death of Ivan Ilyich", "The Kreutzer Sonata", and "Father Sergius".

Since 1921, the house at 21 Leo Tolstoy Street has been functioning as a memorial museum, part of the State Museum of L. N. Tolstoy.
