The museum-estate of Academician A. N. Bakulev in Bakuli village of the Slobodsky district of Kirov region was opened on December 20, 1991. This solid two-story semi-stone house was built by the great-grandfather of Alexander Nikolaevich Bakulev, as his relatives recall. After the dekulakization, the family of his younger brother, who lived in this house, lost it, and it first passed into the ownership of the collective farm 'Trud', and then to the state farm 'Slobodskoy'.

The idea of restoring the museum-estate arose among the residents of the Slobodsky district for the centenary of the birth of the Hero of Socialist Labor, outstanding scientist and world-renowned surgeon, Academician A. N. Bakulev. The decision to create the museum-estate was made by the Slobodsky City and District Council of People's Deputies, as well as the Executive Committee of the Regional Council of People's Deputies in 1989.

In the 15 years of the museum's existence, many economic works have been carried out: the facade of the building has been updated, the interior of the peasant hut has been repaired, the central gates and well have been reconstructed, and wooden floors and sidewalks have been replaced. The foundations under the log walls have been strengthened, and the structures of the buildings have been reinforced. New external water supply and sewage networks have been laid. Landscaping of the estate territory and other works have been carried out.

The exhibitions of the peasant hut and courtyard have been constantly replenished with items of peasant life and crafts. The scientific exhibition in the medical halls has been enriched with new documents and photographs. Scientific research work is ongoing, and scientific material is being collected. The texts of excursions and lectures are constantly updated and supplemented. During this period, many new exhibitions have been opened, including an artistically designed assembly hall with sections 'History of Healthcare in Slobodsky District' and 'Famous Local Medics', as well as exhibitions about Saratov University, A. N. Bakulev's visit to his homeland in 1963, the life of his brother Serafim Nikolaevich, and 'The Daily Life of Old Russia'. A permanent exhibition 'Handwoven Products' has been created.

Today, the museum offers three excursions for visitors: 'The World of the Peasant Family' based on the exhibition of the peasant hut and courtyard, 'A. N. Bakulev, Outstanding Scientist and Surgeon', and 'The History of Slobodsky Healthcare' on the first floor.
