The building of the Upper Provision Warehouse, which houses the Nature and Environmental Protection Museum, is an architectural monument of regional significance. It is one of the oldest stone structures in the city, built between 1809 and 1824, although the name of the project author is unknown. Initially, it served for food storage. In the late 19th century, a "metal shop" owned by merchant Zlokazov operated here. From the 1920s until the early 1980s, the building was used as garages for the executive committee of the City Council.

In 1987, the building was transferred to the Nizhny Tagil Museum-Reserve, and in 1989, its restoration began. Covered galleries on the north and south facades were restored, wrought iron doors and patterned window grilles were made, and the openings were filled with large bricks. The museum halls preserved original construction elements, including columns and beams made of centuries-old larch and masonry of ancient bricks.

In 2005, the updated Nature and Environmental Protection Museum opened to visitors. In 2015, for the museum's tenth anniversary, its exhibition was significantly updated. Currently, the museum features the "Malachite Hall," showcasing the best samples of Tagil malachite and products made from it. The Mednorudyan malachite deposit in Nizhny Tagil, which began development in 1814, is known worldwide for the large quantity and high quality of malachite extracted here.

On the second floor of the museum, exhibitions "The Perfection of Wonderful Facets" and "The Stone Chronicle of Tagil" are presented, demonstrating the richness of the mineralogical collection of the Nizhny Tagil Museum-Reserve.

The museum also implements the project "Special Pantry," which showcases works by jewelers and stonecutters from across the country.
