The Fortress Funa is located at the foot of Mount Demerdzhi, just two kilometers from the village of Luchistoe. The name of the fortress translates from Greek as 'smoky.' In ancient times, this name was borne not only by the fortress itself but also by the entire Mount Demerdzhi. Many legends are associated with Funa, telling of a blacksmith who lived on the mountain. The smoke from his forge was visible to the local residents.

In the Middle Ages, Funa served as a strategic stronghold of the Principality of Theodoro and played an important military and trade role due to its position on the Little Silk Road. The significance of the fortress increased after Genoa conquered the Crimean coast from Gorzuva to Aluston, modern-day Gurzuf and Alushta. Funa became the eastern border post opposing the Genoese fortress and controlled key caravan routes from the peninsula to the coast.

The fortress was built in 1423 and was small in size: about 56 meters wide and approximately 106 meters long. Its territory included a church, residential and economic buildings made of wild stone bonded with clay mortar. A special place was occupied by the Church of St. Theodore Stratilates, within the walls of which archaeologists discovered protective crosses. A marble slab with the date of the start of construction and the symbols of the princes of Theodoro was also found.

In 1459, the fortress was rebuilt into a castle, and a three-tiered main tower, a donjon, 15 meters high, was added. It protected the exits from the castle and controlled the surrounding territory. The tower could accommodate about 40 soldiers.

In 1475, the Ottoman Turks destroyed Funa, and only the church survived, but in 1894 it was destroyed by a landslide. Today, travelers can see only the ruins of the fortress: part of the church's apse and fragments of the wall foundations. The museum features a model that allows visitors to imagine what the fortress looked like in ancient times.

Every year, in honor of the Fortress Funa Day, a festival is held that gathers hundreds of guests. It takes place on the first Saturday after July 19, a date chosen not by chance, as it was found on a slab during excavations. However, the date may change, so it is better to check the information on the fortress's website. The festival features knightly battles, theatrical performances, and workshops on pottery and blacksmithing. The administration of Alushta organizes transfers for event guests.
