The Museum of Folk Applied Arts was opened in 1999. It is located in a one-story wooden house with a mezzanine, built in a classical style and adorned with intricate carvings. The building was constructed in 1907 and belonged to the contractor of the zemstvo administration, P. Lokhanov, until 1917. At different times, it housed the canton executive committee of the Council of Peasant and Soldier Deputies and a craft school.

Today, the house of P. D. Lokhanov is a historical and architectural monument of the Mari El Republic and a cultural heritage site protected by the state. The museum features exhibits that reflect the development of folk crafts in the republic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition includes items of traditional Mari household made from natural materials using weaving, carving techniques, as well as cooperage, carpentry, and joinery crafts. Tools for spinning and weaving, as well as ancient women's costumes showcasing the uniqueness and richness of Mari embroidery, are also presented. The museum's exhibition highlights the diversity and vibrancy of the folk applied arts of the Mari people.

Themed tours are organized for visitors, taking into account their interests, as well as various educational and cultural programs.
