The museum was opened in 2005 at the initiative of the Vologda region administration and the leadership of the Vologda museum-reserve. It is located on the second floor of the former merchant Sitnikov's house, which is a cultural heritage site built in 1868. In 2005, the museum's exhibition included two exhibitions dedicated to N. M. Rubtsov and V. A. Gavrilin. The main focus of the branch's work is excursion activities aimed at different age groups: younger and older schoolchildren, as well as adults. Children's interactive programs are being developed, such as "From Tablets to PCs," the history of writing, "Vovka in the Thirtieth Kingdom," the history of animation, "Dancing Little People," the history of literary ciphers, and others.

In addition to excursions, the branch hosts cultural events, creative evenings for poets and prose writers, presentations of their books, memorial evenings for famous figures in literature and art from the Vologda region, as well as events within the framework of poetry festivals such as "M-8," "Plus Poetry," "Call of the Muses," and "Rubtsov Autumn." The museum actively collaborates with the Vologda branches of the "Union of Writers of Russia" and the "Union of Russian Writers."

In 2007, a film club "Neposredstvenny Film Club" was established at the museum, which meets monthly. Since 2008, regular meetings of the literary association "Wednesday" led by O. A. Fokina, sessions of the literary and local history studio "Leaf" by G. A. Shchekina, and the discussion club "April" headed by poet V. D. Arkhipov have been held at the branch.

In 2008, the museum developed the "New Names" project, which became an experimental and creative platform for emerging photographers and artists. They not only showcase their works but also create installations and creative worlds within the museum space. Presentations, master classes, and interactive excursions are conducted based on the exhibitions.

In 2009, a new development concept for the branch called "Diverse Museum" was developed. The project aims to attract representatives of various social groups to the museum, especially youth, and to create a communication platform for interaction and creative self-realization of visitors. The project was awarded a letter of gratitude at the Regional Project Competition in the field of culture "Star Lace of the North" in 2010.

The museum is also engaged in publishing activities, releasing the literary almanac "Autograph" and brochures about famous writers from Vologda region.
