Museum of the 'Conspiratorial Apartment of the Simbirsk Group of the RSDRP' in Ulyanovsk

In Ulyanovsk, there is a house that is a historical-revolutionary monument. From 1904 to 1906, it served as the conspiratorial apartment of the Simbirsk Social Democrats. The house belonged to V.I. Orlov, a grocery merchant. His eldest son Vasily was one of the leaders of the Simbirsk group of the RSDRP. Even during its construction, the house was adapted for illegal activities: various parts of the house and the yard were equipped with hideouts for storing leaflets, banned literature, and weapons.

The Orlov family lived on the first floor. Vasily Orlov and Valentin Ryabikov lived in the attic room, where secret meetings of the RSDRP group leadership were held and the first leaflets were printed on a hectograph.

After the revolution and until the mid-1960s, house No. 7 on Green Lane remained privately owned. On November 15, 1955, the Ulyanovsk City Committee of the CPSU decided to create the Memorial Museum 'Conspiratorial Apartment of the Simbirsk Group of the RSDRP' as a branch of the Ulyanovsk Regional Local History Museum. On May 29, 1974, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk party organization, the museum was officially opened.

In the hallway before the attic room, two unique hideouts have been preserved: one in the wall and the other in the door. Their masterful concealment allowed them to remain unnoticed for 48 years, even during a police raid in 1906.

The museum's exhibition is located in two rooms: one of them previously served as a bedroom, while the other, in the attic, was the attic room, where the early 20th-century interior has been restored. In the room that was the living and dining room during the Orlovs' time, an exhibition titled 'Time Chose Us' has been presented since May 4, 2006, dedicated to Ulyanovsk residents who participated in local wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya.
