The ancient Romans claimed: "Where there are people, there are rules," however, human nature is such that there are always those who break the laws. Therefore, along with the development of the state and society, law enforcement agencies are formed.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia is a state structure that has gone through many trials, honorably fulfilling its task of protecting the population and state interests. Many aspects of this complex path remain underexplored. The research and excursion activities of the Museum help to uncover unknown pages of history, bringing back from oblivion and preserving the names of employees who contributed to history.

The museum was founded in 1985 at the initiative of the Council of Veterans of the Internal Affairs bodies based on the Police School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the KASSR and has undergone several significant changes during its existence. Today, the exhibition "The History of Law Enforcement in Karelia. 17th to 21st Century" tells about the formation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Karelia, covering the period from the Time of Troubles to the present day. The National Museum and the National Archive of the Republic of Karelia actively participated in the creation of the exhibitions. The exhibition includes about a thousand museum items, documents, and photographs.

Another direction of the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Museum of Karelia is the organization of scientific research activities and the publication of information bulletins to popularize the historical path and experience of law enforcement agencies in Russia and Karelia. This involves students, graduate students, and applicants from universities, employees of scientific and museum institutions, as well as independent researchers. Publications are available in the reading rooms of the National Library of the RK, the National Archive of the RK, and Petrozavodsk State University.

Museum staff actively participate in historical and patriotic conferences, seminars, and projects, give lectures in educational institutions in Petrozavodsk, and engage in patriotic education.

Visiting the museum is free, but prior application is required. Services are provided only in the format of guided tours.
