The Museum of History and Crafts of the Soviet District, a young museum, emerged in the late 1970s as one of many public museums typical of the Soviet era. Its creation was made possible by the initiative of caring individuals who sought to preserve the memory of the heroic labor of the first builders.

The first of them was Nikolai Fyodorovich Bazhenov (1923, 1997). In March 1968, he arrived in the newly formed Soviet District and was elected the second secretary of the district committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for ideology, serving in this position for over 17 years. He proposed to the staff of the political education office of the district party committee and the culture department to start collecting materials and items that later became the foundation of the museum's exhibition.

In 1974, the first exhibits arrived at the political education office located on the first floor of the House of Soviets. The first to respond was the Hero of Socialist Labor, delegate of the 24th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, former foreman of the Komsomol forest industry Ivan Mefodievich Afanasyev, who donated his delegate mandate and photographs with government members in the Kremlin Palace. The family of the Mansi Dunaevs donated national household items, which still form the basis of the museum's ethnographic exhibition. Foremen of Komsomol youth brigades, winners of the socialist competition of 1973, donated a lumberjack's helmet with autographs, and workers from the brick factory donated the first brick.

A significant role in the creation of the museum and the accumulation of exhibits was played by party worker, later chairwoman of the Kondinsk district executive committee Fesa Fyodorovna Pshenichnikova (Pichugova). She appealed to the residents of the district to bring items and documents that tell about the people who contributed to the development of the region. Thanks to her efforts and activists, by 1981, the museum had acquired ancient coins found in the Kondy. Builders of the Ivdel-Ob railway explained this by saying that a coachman’s trade route passed through here in the past. In the same year, a student from Kazan State University, Anatoly Gavrilov, donated rare finds from a sacred storage: 83 coins, 3 rings, 1 medallion, and 21 lead figurines.

In 1985, Tamara Pavlovna Karasova began working at the museum. Enthusiastic about history, she engaged in local studies, organized excursion work, and replenished the museum's funds. After a business trip to Khanty-Mansiysk and consultations at the district local history museum, she began to bring order to the accounting and storage of collections.

On February 15, 1985, the executive committee of the Soviet District Council of People's Deputies decided to open a local history museum on a public basis, combining two halls, local history and nature, which were located in the administrative building of the "Malaya Sosva" reserve. The nature hall contained materials about the flora and fauna of the region and the history of nature conservation.

On July 19, 1990, the executive committee of the Soviet District Council of People's Deputies decided to open a branch of the Khanty-Mansiysk District Museum in the settlement of Sovietsky, with Maria Evtykhievna Gavrilova as its head.

On January 1, 1995, by the order of the head of the Soviet District G.N. Zelentsov, the branch of the district museum was renamed the district museum and exhibition center, with Natalia Vladimirovna Shabalina as its leader. The museum received a new lease on life, continuing the work of collecting and processing exhibits, with attention given to cultural activities. The museum became a place for communication among artists, musicians, and creative individuals.

On October 13, 2014, by a decree of the head of the administration of the Soviet District, a decision was made to merge the district museum and exhibition center with the center for creativity and crafts "Chance," creating the institution Museum of History and Crafts of the Soviet District. Galina Alexandrovna Zokova was appointed as the museum director. The new status of the cultural institution allows the museum, with its creative and strong team, to keep pace with the times, carrying out scientific, educational, and cultural activities for all residents of the district.
