The idea of creating a local history museum in the Adler district of Sochi was first proposed by writer and local historian Igor Konstantinovich Nedolya in the 1960s. In the 1960s and 70s, his home, where he served as the chairman of the Adler district branch of the All-Russian Geographical Society, housed a home museum. It featured archaeological and numismatic collections, folk crafts, rare books, and other exhibits. Nedolya sought to find a space for a district museum to transfer his collections, but this was not realized during his lifetime. After his death, the collections became fragmented, and only a small part was transferred to the museum after its opening.

The museum in the district was established by war veterans, with an initiative group led by Hero of the Soviet Union S.E. Voytenko and retired engineer-colonel I.N. Baryshev. On September 1, 1989, employees of the culture department and the museum of the history of the resort city of Sochi opened a museum exhibition titled "Adler District from Ancient Times to the Present Day," based on the collections of war and labor veterans from the district in the 1950s to 80s. This day is considered the founding day of the museum.

Today, the collection of the museum of the history of Adler district contains over 15,000 items. Among them is a collection of paintings by Honored Artist of the RSFSR and member of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation Bronislav Stashevsky, as well as the collection of writer and local historian I.K. Nedolya. The main focus of the museum's work is the study of the history of the Adler district, including collecting and archival activities, as well as educational and outreach work. The museum serves as a center for patriotic education of the youth.
