Contemporary art often sparks lively discussions, but in St. Petersburg, they have found a way to offer something interesting for everyone, regardless of their cultural preferences.

The Museum of Art of St. Petersburg XX-XXI Centuries (MISP) recently opened but has already become popular among locals and tourists. What makes its collections so remarkable, and why should you see them?

Building of the Museum

The museum is located in a former police headquarters on the Griboedov Canal, built in 1842-1843 according to the design of Zakhar Krasnopevkov. This building, originally dreary and devoid of architectural embellishments, has been rebuilt multiple times. In 1917, it was burned during the revolution, and after repairs, it was partially converted into communal apartments. Over time, it housed a party archive, a printing house, and other organizations, and in the 21st century, the Archive of the City Court. It was here that the Museum of Art of the XX-XXI Centuries was established.

From Department to Full-fledged Museum

Initially, the museum was a department of contemporary art at the Manezh exhibition hall and had only a few exhibits. In the 1990s, at the direction of Mayor Anatoly Sobchak, work began to collect and systematize the works of local artists. Over time, the collection grew, and the department required a separate building. Various options were considered, but ultimately, the building by the Griboedov Canal was chosen. In 2005, the transfer of premises from the Small Hall of the Manezh began, and in 2016, the branch received official status.

Modern Approach

The museum does not have a permanent exhibition but offers something new every month. It showcases graphics, paintings, collages, installations, and decorative applied art by well-known authors such as Vladimir Grinberg, Zaven Arshakuni, and Vladimir Lebedev. The museum demonstrates the development of art in St. Petersburg from the XX-XXI centuries with over 3000 exhibits reflecting key trends and styles.

Interactive Events

The museum actively engages with visitors through interactive tours, film screenings, and performances. These events complement current exhibitions and help to better understand the artistic images and ideas of the authors. The museum has become not only an exhibition space but also an educational center where one can learn to distinguish quality art from mediocre.

Scientific Activities

The museum is actively involved in scientific and educational activities, conducting lectures and master classes. Discussions on color and form theory, as well as interactive exhibitions, are popular here. Visitors can participate in creative workshops and other educational projects.

Future Plans

The museum has acquired additional premises on the site of former barracks and plans to open a permanent exhibition by the beginning of 2023. MISP also participates in festivals and organizes traveling exhibitions covering the history and culture of St. Petersburg.
