The museum has separate halls dedicated to significant events in the life of Gorodets that are worth telling. Shipbuilding and grain trade were the main sources of income for local merchants. Interestingly, the museum building once housed the primary classes of a women's gymnasium, and before the revolution, it was home to the treasury.

Museum visitors can see authentic items and documents from the Gorodets Volunteer Fire Society, including a banner. They will also learn how the city's residents actively participated in World War I: fighting on the front lines and helping refugees and the wounded in the rear. The exhibits also tell about the charitable activities of Gorodets merchants, who, for example, fully funded the construction and maintenance of an orphanage. On the second floor of the museum is the memorial complex "Soldiers of the Sky, Preserving Historical Memory."
