Almost 30 years ago, veterans of war and labor created a district club dedicated to revolutionary, combat, and labor glory. They began collecting documents and materials on the history of Belorechensk. In 1981, a museum was opened on a voluntary basis, which soon received district status. Until 1983, it was headed by the veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Vasily Semyonovich Mironov.

After his death, it was difficult to find a suitable successor, and the museum fell into neglect. During the renovation of the House of Culture, many exhibits were lost. Galina Alexeyevna Morozkina, appointed director of the museum on a voluntary basis in 1988, took on the task of preserving the remaining exhibits and reviving local history work.

The museum was temporarily located in a room of the pioneers' house and then in the basement of the music school. After long efforts to find a premises, the museum finally received a building. It was in a dilapidated state, but after renovation, it opened to visitors on May 8, 1995, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Victory.

The museum staff actively engaged in scientific collection and educational activities. As a result, the collection inherited, which consisted of 189 exhibits, grew to 5,300 items by early 2006. In the same year, the museum was granted the status of a municipal institution. Currently, the museum's funds contain more than 7,500 exhibits.
