The Murom Historical and Art Museum is dedicated to the history and culture of Murom and its surroundings. It is part of the Union of Museums of Russia and is a member of the Association of Museums of Russia.

In 1918, Vladimir Ivanovich Zhadin, a native of Murom, became one of the initiators of the establishment of a local history museum in the city. On January 1, 1919, the first exhibitions of the museum opened in the house of the Zvorikins, where the famous television inventor Vladimir Zvorikin was born.

From 1974 to 1989, the museum was part of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve as a branch, called the Murom Branch of the Vladimir-Suzdal Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. From 1989 to 1997, it operated as an independent institution under the management of the city’s culture department and was named the Murom Historical and Art Memorial Museum.

In 1997, the museum was registered as a municipal cultural institution under the management of the Culture Department of the Murom Administration and was named the Murom Historical and Art Museum.

Since January 1, 2007, the museum has been under regional jurisdiction, and since January 1, 2009, it has been granted the status of a particularly valuable cultural heritage site of the Vladimir region.

The museum belongs to the first category of art museums and possesses valuable artistic and historical collections. It occupies four complexes of buildings that are monuments of civil architecture.

The core of the museum's art collection consists of collections from renowned archaeologists Count A. S. Uvarov and his wife P. S. Uvarova. Works of ancient Russian art were acquired from churches and monasteries, while ethnographic collections were gathered before the revolution by artist I. S. Kulikov, N. G. Dobrykin, A. F. Zhadin and brought from museum expeditions. Since 1990, the museum has been conducting all-Russian scientific conferences, Uvarov Readings, every three years during Easter week, as well as annual scientific expeditions.

The museum publishes scientific and popular publications, as well as materials about Murom in electronic formats and on the Internet.

The main partners of the museum in the non-profit sector are museums in the cities of the Pooch region, such as Gorokhovets, Kovrov, Vyazniki, Kasimov, Pavlovo, Arzamas, Sarov, and Alexandrov. The museum serves as the basic scientific institution of the museum network "Commonwealth of Museums of the Lower Oka" and, together with partners, implements numerous projects funded by external resources. The creative team of the museum consists of 30 museum specialists and almost the same number of staff in technical and support services.
