The Historical and Local Lore Museum of Ust-Labinsk District has a rich history. It was founded in the Ust-Labinsk stanitsa by local historian Mikhail Ivanovich Petrenko in the mid-1920s, using his personal collection.

In 1932, after gathering a significant number of exhibits, Mikhail Ivanovich opened the Collective Farm Museum in the building of the current Social-Pedagogical College. By 1941, the collection numbered over 28,000 unique items, but they were lost during the occupation.

In 1951, Petrenko managed to acquire new exhibits from the A. V. Suvorov Museum in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and opened a museum named after the commander in Ust-Labinsk. However, local authorities, not recognizing their significance, transferred the exhibits to the museum in Kherson, leading to the ruin of the collection, and in 1953 the museum was closed. Since 1958, using the remaining exhibits, Mikhail Ivanovich was able to open the Historical and Local Lore Museum, which was reorganized three times thereafter.

Only in 1999, after gaining municipal status, did the museum begin actively registering, accounting for, and replenishing its collection, which now numbers 18,000 items. The modern museum of Ust-Labinsk District includes three departments with different themes. Its main building, representing 19th-century architecture, houses six exhibition halls with permanent and temporary exhibits.
