Monument to Saint Michael the Archangel in Sochi

Фото 1
The stele of Saint Michael the Archangel in Sochi is a 27-meter monument made of solid bronze, installed on a five-meter granite slab. It consists of a 20-meter column topped with a seven-meter sculpture of Michael the Archangel. A bronze plaque with the year of installation is placed on the lower part of the monument.

By the order of Mayor V. V. Kolodyazhny, the construction of the monument began in 2006. The holy archangel is traditionally considered the patron of Sochi, and the main altar in the Church of Michael the Archangel is dedicated to his memory.

The location for the monument was chosen deliberately, as there is a mass grave of Russian soldiers who defended the coastal city of Alexandria in the 19th century nearby. The monument's project was developed by architect S. Sukhorukov, and the sculpture was created by the renowned Sochi sculptor V. Zelenko.

The monument is located near the Sochi railway station. A walk will allow you to see the majestic column with the towering sculpture. If you arrived by sea, the seaport is also nearby.
