The monument was erected with funds from the peasants of the village of Tarutino and the village of Granishchevo, liberated by Count S.P. Rumyantsev, and was solemnly opened on June 25, 1834 (July 7 in the new style) in honor of Russia's liberation from the enemy in 1812.

The village of Tarutino, founded in the 15th century, gained worldwide fame in 1812 when it became the location of the Russian army's camp after the abandonment of Moscow.

At the end of 1812, Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov wrote to A.N. Naryshkina about Tarutino: “...The village of Tarutino, which belongs to you, is marked by the glorious victory of the Russian army over the enemy. From now on, its name should shine in our chronicles alongside Poltava, and the Nara River will become as significant to us as the Nepryadva, on the banks of which countless armies of Mamai perished...”

Today, Tarutino continues to be an important object of Russia's historical heritage. The legacies of Kutuzov have been fulfilled and even somewhat enhanced.
