Sir Montague Maurice Burton, born as Moshe David Osinski in Kurkliai, Russian Empire (now Lithuania), on August 15, 1885, passed away on September 21, 1952. He founded Burton Menswear, one of the largest clothing store chains in the UK.

The Burton family moved to the UK in 1900, and by 1901 he was living in Cheetham Hill, Manchester. Starting as a street vendor, in 1903 he opened his first shop in Chesterfield, selling ready-made suits purchased from wholesalers. After marrying Sophie Marks in 1909, the company changed its name from M. Burton to Burton & Burton.

In 1917, after the birth of twin sons, he changed his name to Montague Maurice Burton. By 1913, he had five tailoring shops for men's clothing, with a head office in Sheffield and production in Leeds. By 1929, when the company went public, the chain had four hundred shops, factories, and mills. During World War II, his firm produced a quarter of British military uniforms and a third of clothing for demobilized soldiers.

In 1930, Burton declined an offer to become Lord Mayor of Leeds, but in 1931 he was knighted for his contributions to labor relations and had been a magistrate since 1924.

In 1940, he became a member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries and in 1944 received an honorary degree (DLitt) from the University of Leeds. Burton established chairs of industrial relations at the universities of Leeds and Cardiff in 1929 and at Cambridge in 1930. He also founded chairs of international relations in Jerusalem (1929), Oxford (1930), the London School of Economics and Political Science (1936), and the University of Edinburgh (1948).

His name is commemorated in Montague Burton residences, which became student accommodations at the University of Leeds.

Burton passed away during a speech after lunch in Leeds on September 21, 1952. The funeral took place at the Harrogate synagogue, although some sources indicate Chapeltown. He was buried in Gildersome, but in 1964 he and his wife were reinterred at the Stonefall Jewish Cemetery in Harrogate, becoming the first to be buried there.
