Nikolai Romanovich passed away on September 15, 2014, in Tuscany. The farewell ceremony took place on September 17, attended by his family, representatives from Russia, and local authorities. The funeral service was held at the Church of Saints Jacob and Christopher.
Two priests from the Roman Church of Saint Catherine the Great Martyr of the Moscow Patriarchate conducted the funeral ceremony. At the coffin was a wreath of flowers in the colors of the Russian tricolor, as well as many other wreaths and fresh flowers. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to the family through the Russian ambassador to the Vatican, Alexander Avdeev, who also conveyed a telegram of sympathy from State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin. Nikolai Romanovich was buried in Pisa, in the crypt of the Counts della Gerardesca, relatives of his wife.
