In every neighborhood, even in residential areas, you can find a local landmark. On Vodopyanova Street, this is the Mitrofanovskaya Church, the oldest building in the district, constructed during the reign of Nicholas I. According to ancient Orthodox tradition, a church or chapel was built near every cemetery. However, the cemetery near the village of Timakovka remained without a religious structure for almost 40 years. Responding to the requests of local residents, Archpriest Antoniy of the Vvedenskaya Church appealed to Bishop Ioann of Penza and Saransk for the construction of a stone church. The bishop quickly provided financial support, and the first service was held here in the summer of 1838. However, due to the lack of a permanent clergy, services were held infrequently, and the church quickly fell into disrepair, turning into ruins after 40 years. Merchant Posobtsov took on the major restoration, having buried his respected manager, or as we would say today, top manager, at the Mitrofan Cemetery. In his memory, the merchant invested significant funds into the restoration of the church. Two chapels were expanded, a refectory was built, and the area for services was increased to accommodate 700 people. This church is interesting not only as an architectural monument. It houses a valuable relic, the icon of Our Lady of Kazan, gifted to the first settlers by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. According to legends, this miraculous image helped protect the fortress from nomads.
