On the northeast road from Yoshkar-Ola, among endless fields, a picturesque view of one of the oldest monasteries in the Mari region and the entire left bank of the Volga, the Mironositsky Desert, opens up to the traveler. This place, as chroniclers said, is 'very beautiful and adorned' by labor and prayers. The history of the monastery is full of charm; its walls have withstood the centuries, encompassing the appearance of the icon and miracles of healing, monastic service and flourishing, years of hardship and devastation, and then gradual revival. The monastery was established in the mid-17th century when peasant Andrei Ivanovich Zholnin discovered a miraculous icon of the Holy Mother of God with the holy myrrh-bearing women. In May 1647, while working in the field, he saw a carved image of the Mother of God, covered with woven silver. When he tried to take the icon, it became invisible, but soon appeared on a tree. Andrei brought it home, where the icon radiated sunlight. Soon, news of the miraculous image spread to Tsarevokokshaysk, and many people set out for the place of its discovery. The icon was transferred to the Resurrection Cathedral and then sent to Moscow by order of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. In 1649, the tsar commanded the return of the icon and the construction of the monastery, which was completed in 1652.

The wooden church lasted for 67 years, after which the construction of a stone church began, consecrated around 1719. This church, a bright monument of 17th-century Russian architecture, has survived to this day. The Mironositsky church is a two-story structure with a cold main church and chapels adorned with white stone 'ornamentation.' The five-tiered tent bell tower gives the complex a slender appearance. In 1921, a labor artel was located on the monastery grounds, and later a children's home settled here. At the end of the 20th century, the revival of the Mironositsky Desert as a women's monastery began. In 1993, the Mari diocese was formed, which took over the monastery. Restoration work began under the guidance of Priest Sergey Kozhevnikov. In 1994, nuns from the Tolga Monastery arrived to revive it. Currently, 18 residents live in the monastery, and it is gradually regaining its former glory. The processional walk with the miraculous icon has also been revived, attracting pilgrims seeking spiritual solace and tranquility.
