The museum was established on the initiative and organization of the local historian S.A. Khukhrin, who became its first director. The opening took place on October 15, 1988, and initially, the museum functioned as a branch of the Kursk Regional Local History Museum. Over its existence, it has changed status several times, but since 2014, it has again been a branch of the regional local history museum.

The museum's collections hold more than 18,000 items, and its exhibition area is 88 square meters. The exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Soviet writer Nikolai Nikolaevich Aseev, who lived from 1889 to 1963.

The museum is located in the house where N.N. Aseev was born and lived until the age of 17. The halls display original documents, personal belongings of the poet, and household items from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Special attention is given to the poet's library, in which many books were gifted to him by renowned writers and figures of science and art, complete with their autographs.

The museum is visited by about 6,000 people annually.
