The memorial complex dedicated to the soldiers from Gorky who fell during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 was built in 1964 based on a project selected through a competition. The construction was funded by city enterprises. The complex was inaugurated on May 8, 1965, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of Victory Day. The project was authored by the honored architects of Russia S. A. Timofeev and B. S. Nelyubin, architect V. Ya. Kovalev, as well as artists V. V. Lyubimov, E. E. Lamster, N. P. Topunov, and A. M. Shvaikin. The complex features a frontal composition located along the upper edge of the slope in the western part of the Kremlin. In the center is the eternal flame on a gray granite pedestal. Nearby stands the main stele, clad in granite, depicting the figures of two soldiers in battle and the dates 1941-1945. On the reverse side of the stele are inscribed the words 'Eternal memory to the Gorky residents who fell in battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland!' and the names of 102 Heroes of the Soviet Union and 2 holders of the Orders of Glory of three degrees. On the side stele are engraved verses by V. Polovinkin, calling to remember those who fell for honor, freedom, and the Motherland. The names of Gorky residents who repeated the feats of Nikolai Gastello and Alexander Matrosov, as well as those who are forever listed in the ranks of military units, are also mentioned on the stele. Alongside the stele are gilded wreaths symbolizing the missing soldiers. In 1976, the letters on the main stele were gilded, and in 1978, the low stele with the verses was gilded. This memorial complex is a monument of history and an object of cultural heritage of regional significance in Russia.
