This site was once home to the "House of Friends of Deptford," which was demolished in 1807. The Russian Tsar Peter the Great visited this place in 1697 and 1698. During his visit to England, he not only worked at shipyards and visited various royal institutions such as the Arsenal in Woolwich, the Observatory, the Mint, and the Royal Society to deepen his technical knowledge and acquire scientific equipment, but he also spent a lot of time with the clergy. He met with Bishop Gilbert Burnet of Salisbury and interacted with Quakers. His visit to the Quaker meeting house in Deptford on April 3, 1698, is commemorated by a memorial plaque at 144 Deptford High Street. Currently, this site houses a Salvation Army store.
