Duke Peter Georgievich of Oldenburg, born on August 26, 1812, and died on May 14, 1881, belonged to the Oldenburg dynasty and was part of the Russian imperial family. He was renowned as a scholar, philanthropist, and composer. In 1857, Peter of Oldenburg created music for Marius Petipa's ballet "The Rose, the Violet, and the Papillon," and his Pas d'Esclave from the ballet "Le Corsaire" is still performed in theaters around the world.

Additionally, the duke was a polyglot, fluent in eight languages. As the honorary president of the "Tsarina Maria" trust, he actively participated in the development of hospitals in Russia, including the Children's Hospital of Prince Peter of Oldenburg in St. Petersburg.

In 2014, a memorial plaque was installed in the city of Torquay in honor of his visit in 1850 and the establishment of the city hospital.
