Mausoleum of the Demidovs

Фото 1
Here rests the remains of Elizabeth Demidova, born Baroness Stroganova, who passed away on April 8, 1818. She was the wife of His Excellency Envoy Demidov, a secret advisor and actual chamberlain of His Majesty the Emperor of Russia, as well as a commander of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

This epitaph is inscribed on the base of the Demidov mausoleum, located in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

On the lid of the sarcophagus are depicted two pairs of oval shields with the coats of arms of Elizabeth Alexandrovna: one belongs to the Stroganov barons, to whom she was born, and the other, to the Demidov nobility, to which she joined through marriage.

Interesting fact: in 1814, during the capture of Paris by Russian troops, Cossacks set up their camp in this cemetery.
