The monuments of Volgograd hold a special place in the military history of our country, particularly the main memorial complex dedicated to the significant and tragic events of World War II. During the Battle of Stalingrad, Hill 102 was strategically important, changing hands multiple times. This is due to the fact that the mound rises above the terrain, allowing control not only over the city but also over the crossing of the Volga and the Volga region. The battle for Mamaev Kurgan became the bloodiest in the history of wars, lasting 135 days, while the entire Battle of Stalingrad lasted 200 days and nights. The final victory in this battle was achieved by the Soviet troops, marked by the capture of Hill 102 and the raising of the flag. The victory at Stalingrad became a turning point in the course of the war, and its importance and tragedy are reflected in the memorial complex 'Motherland Calls.' Mamaev Kurgan became the burial site for over 34,000 people who fell in defense of Stalingrad and its surroundings. After the war, this charred and bullet-riddled land long remained a monument to the heroic events and all those who died for the Motherland. The idea of erecting a monument on this elevation in 1959 was realized in the memorial to the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad, built on Mamaev Kurgan.
