The mass grave where the soldiers of the 95th Rifle Division, commanded by Vasily Akimovich Gorishny, rest is located on the banks of the Volga in the Metallurg settlement of the Krasnoktyabrsky district. Here, some of the fiercest battles took place. Finding the obelisk today is not easy: there are no signs, and not all residents of the area know of its existence.

It was in this place, near the ‘Krasny Oktyabr’ factory, in the Deep Ravine, that the front line of the division's defense was located. The ravine was under constant fire from the Germans all the way to the Volga, leading to significant losses among the soldiers, which is why the place was named ‘Death Hollow’. The exact number of Soviet warriors who perished in those battles is unknown. Those who survived the approaches to the Volga later fought at Mamaev Kurgan, in the area of the Stalingrad Tractor Factory and the Barricades Factory. For their displayed heroism in the Battle of Stalingrad, the division was awarded the Guards title.

In this place, thousands of German soldiers attempting to break through to the Volga through the ravine were destroyed by the brave defenders of Stalingrad. However, despite this, the residents of Volgograd and local authorities rarely visit this site. The wreaths on the mass grave have long turned yellow and worn out, and there are no fresh flowers.
